Mumbai, 4 June 2025 : India’s stainless steel industry has issued a strong call for a long-overdue National Stainless Steel Policy to unlock its full potential in manufacturing, innovation, and global competitiveness. The announcement came at the 3rd edition of the Global Stainless Steel Expo 2025 (GSSE 2025), which opened today at the Bombay Exhibition Centre, Mumbai. The event has brought together over 10,000 stakeholders, including industry leaders, policymakers, and global experts.

Speaking at the inauguration, Rajamani Krishnamurti, President of the Indian Stainless Steel Development Association (ISSDA), said, “India’s stainless steel consumption reached 4.8 million tonnes in FY25, registering 8% year-on-year growth. Yet, nearly 30% of this is still met by imports, while domestic capacity remains underutilized. For the stainless steel industry to reach its true potential, we need a policy framework that boosts confidence, supports Make in India, and ensures long-term sustainability and competitiveness. At GSSE, we are reaffirming our call for a level-playing field, urging policymakers to proactively safeguard the sector while promoting innovation.”

As India’s foremost stainless steel platform, GSSE 2025 is driving strategic discussions on domestic capacity, sustainable growth, and the integration of stainless steel across national initiatives, from infrastructure and defence to mobility and renewable energy.

“Stainless steel is no longer just about kitchens, it’s powering India’s future in nuclear, medical, renewable, and transport sectors,” said Ratan Jindal, Chairman of Jindal Stainless. To become a global manufacturing giant, India must invest not just in capacity but in capability, through R&D, innovation, and green manufacturing, he added. With India now the second-largest consumer and third-largest producer of stainless steel, industry leaders urge the government to frame a dedicated national policy, one that embeds stainless steel across key missions like infrastructure, defence, space, and urban development said Ratan Jindal.

Anitha Raghunath, Convenor of GSSE and Director at Virgo Communications, highlighted the strategic importance of the event, “With a market worth USD 22.4 billion and growing fast, India’s stainless steel industry is on an unstoppable rise,” said Anitha Raghunath, Convenor of GSSE 2025. “GSSE 2025 is the launchpad for cross-sector innovation, from EVs and aerospace to renewables and defence. This is where the future of stainless steel is being shaped, powering everything from the blue economy to Digital India, ” added Anitha.

GSSE 2025 will run from 4th to 6th June, showcasing cutting-edge innovations, international partnerships, and policy discussions aimed at creating a self-reliant and globally competitive stainless steel ecosystem for India.
