Bogus Insurance Claims: 2 Accused Given Rigorous Imprisonment

Mumbai, May 29, 2024: The Special Judge for CBI Cases, Jammu on Wednesday sentenced two accused including R N Tickoo, Investigator an investigator on panel of oriental insurance company (OIC) Jammu and Satish Chander Wasoori, a claimant (private person) to 3-5 years Rigorous Imprisonment (RI) with total fine of Rs. 90,000/ in a case related to bogus insurance claims, as per a press release issued by the CBI. Accused Satish Chander Wasoori, a claimant (private person), was sentenced to Rigorous Imprisonment (RI) of 5 years with fine of Rs60,000/ while accused R N Tickoo, Investigator was sentenced to RI of 03 years with fine of Rs30,000.

The instant case was registered by CBI on 13.04.2007 against the accused including the aforesaid accused convicted by the Court today on the allegations that aforesaid persons entered conspiracy with one another, submitted bogus insurance claims for the dwelling houses reported to be located at Srinagar and which were reported to be gutted in fire during the year 1997-98.

It was further alleged that the accused obtained undue claim to the tune of Rs. 9,52,913/- (approx) from the insurance company i.e. Oriental Insurance Company Limited though no fire incident took place during the relevant period as per the records of J&K Fire and Emergency Services Command, Srinagar.

After completion of investigation, chargesheet was filed on 18.02.2009.

The chargesheet in relation to false claim in respect of residential building of Satish Chander Wasoori, was filed against accused Subhash Saraf, Surveyor; Raj Nath Tickoo, Investigator; Satish Chander Wasoori, Claimant and Badri Nath Koul, Development Officer, Oriental Insurance Company.  Charges were framed on 16.11.2010 against all the accused. The accused Subhash Saraf, Surveyor and Badri Nath Koul, Development officer expired during the trial, hence charges against them were abatted.  

After trial, the Court held both accused guilty and sentenced them accordingly.  CBI examined 32 witnesses and 97 documents in support of the charges which stood test of trial in the Court.
