Mumbai, March 20, 2025: "Maharashtra is the backbone of India’s data economy, hosting 60% of the country’s data center businesses, with Mumbai alone contributing 54.9% of total capacity. With world-class digital infrastructure, reliable power, and strategic connectivity, the state is set to accelerate India's digital future with four new data center parks in Mumbai, Pune, and Nagpur, said Dr. P. Anbalagan, Secretary, Industries Dept, Govt of Maharashtra, while addressing the CII Datacenter Summit, held at Jio World Convention Center, BKC, Mumbai.
CII’s 6th National Datacenter Blueprint Summit 2025 took place with the theme of Shaping the Future of Sustainable Digital Infrastructure. The Summit 2025 brought together industry leaders, policymakers, and investors to shape the future of India’s growing data center sector. Maharashtra reaffirmed its leadership, accounting for 60% of India's data center market, with Mumbai alone contributing 54.9% of total capacity.
The state’s data center capacity is set to grow from 500 MW to 800 MW by 2028, solidifying its role as India’s digital infrastructure hub. With India’s total operational capacity at 2,337 MW, an additional 1.5 GW expansion will be crucial for future demands.
Energy management and policy stability were key themes. The MIG policy enables power banking between peak and non-peak hours, optimizing costs for data centers. “Policy stability is critical. Stakeholders must work with the energy ministry to ensure continuity for at least five years,” emphasized Dr. Anbalagan. The 2023 deemed license provision was also highlighted for streamlining operations.
The industry is evolving with 5G, Starlink, and decentralized data centers, demanding smart energy solutions, modular infrastructure, and emerging technologies like modular nuclear energy. “5G and edge computing will reshape the industry, requiring innovative solutions to ensure long-term growth and efficiency,” noted P. Velrasu, CEO, MIDC.
Maharashtra remains the top choice for investors and service providers, with a 40% market share. Mr. Manoj Paul, Chairman, CII WR Taskforce on Datacenter & MD - India, Equinix, reaffirmed that the state’s data center capacity is on track to expand from 500 MW to 800 MW by 2028, further solidifying its position as India's digital infrastructure hub.
India’s data center industry is witnessing unprecedented transformation, attracting billions in investments. Mr. Sharad Agarwal, CEO, Sify Technologies Limited, shared that the sector is on an accelerated growth trajectory, driven by surging demand and ambitious expansion plans.
Sustainability was a major focus, with Maharashtra leading in solar- and wind-powered green data centers. “Data center energy consumption is expected to double by 2030. Maharashtra is championing renewable solutions to reduce environmental impact,” said Rishi Kumar Bagla, Deputy Chairman, CII WR & CMD, BG Electricals & Electronics India Ltd.
The summit’s exhibition featured leading players like Sify, AdaniConnex, Colt, Fixotec, and Equinix, showcasing advancements in modular architectures, AI-driven efficiency, and renewable integration.
With billions in investments flowing into India's data center industry, Maharashtra remains the top choice for investors, backed by progressive policies, strong infrastructure, and a commitment to sustainability. The CII Datacenter Blueprint Summit 2025 reinforced Maharashtra’s vision for digital transformation, driving India's leadership in the global data economy.
