Mumbai, July 20, 2024: Chief Minister Shri Bhupendra Patel delivered an inspiring address to strengthen the semiconductor ecosystem during the inauguration of the 'Gujarat Semiconnect Conference 2024' in Gandhinagar. Chief Minister highlighted Gujarat's commitment to advancing Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi's vision of establishing India as a global hub for semiconductor and electronics manufacturing. The one-day Gujarat Semiconnect Conference, held at Mahatma Mandir in Gandhinagar, was organized by the State Government's Department of Science and Technology. The conference sought to advance the domestic semiconductor ecosystem in line with the Gujarat Semiconductor Policy (2022-27) and Gujarat Electronics Policy (2022-28), while also supporting the Government of India's Semiconductor Program. Chief Minister Shri Bhupendra Patel noted that India is set to become the world’s third-largest economic power during Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi's third term.
Stating that the semiconductor sector will play a crucial role in building Viksit Bharat, the Chief Minister described the organization of the conference as the 'Right job at the Right time'. CM emphasized that today's world needs a reliable and trusted chip supply chain. In this context, the Prime Minister has launched the India Semiconductor Mission to make India self-reliant (Atmanirbhar) in the semiconductor sector. The Chief Minister noted that Gujarat has consistently led in realizing the Prime Minister’s resolutions and vision. Gujarat became the first state in the country to implement the Gujarat Semiconductor Policy in 2022. The Chief Minister also highlighted that Dholera is set to be the first greenfield smart city, with the state government having developed a plug-and-play facility there for semiconductor and electronics manufacturing. The Chief Minister conveyed the belief that Gujarat will soon make the country’s first semiconductor chip, embodying the mottos of 'Make in India' and 'Atmanirbhar Bharat'. The Chief Minister noted that over 80 percent of investors interested in the semiconductor sector are eager to set up their units in Gujarat. He assured that the state government is dedicated to providing the necessary support and assistance to these industries. Highlighting the sector's benefits for the youth, the Chief Minister pointed out the new opportunities for skill development and startups in both the semiconductor industry and its ancillary fields. He also mentioned that Gujarat is making significant strides in developing a high-tech workforce for the semiconductor sector.
Chief Secretary of Gujarat, Shri Raj Kumar, stated that Gujarat is emerging as a semiconductor hub in India due to its industry-friendly policies. The state is developing Dholera as a semiconductor center, providing all essential facilities in one location. He added that Gujarat is on track to realize Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi’s vision of self-sufficiency in the semiconductor sector. He added that the state government has signed several MoUs with leading organizations to advance the semiconductor ecosystem in Gujarat, encompassing everything from manufacturing to the development of skilled manpower. Renowned companies like Micron have also supported the Gujarat government’s initiatives. He highlighted the state government's dedication to creating all the necessary facilities for the growth of the semiconductor sector. Shri S. Krishnan, Secretary of Central Electronics and Information Technology, noted that India has made significant strides in semiconductor sector investments over the past year, with Gujarat at the forefront.
The Indian Semiconductor Mission is concentrating investments on strategic areas, with a focus on strengthening the ecosystem. Under Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi’s leadership, the central government has allocated approximately ₹76,000 crore in subsidies for semiconductor sector investments, with additional support from state governments. Additionally, training programs are being offered to unskilled youth to enhance employment opportunities. He concluded by stating that the Semiconnect conference in Gujarat will be instrumental in advancing future research and investment in the semiconductor sector.
Shri Gurusharan Singh, Senior Vice President of Micron, highlighted Gujarat's key role in establishing India as a semiconductor hub, attributing this progress to the visionary leadership of Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi and the continuous support of Chief Minister Shri Bhupendra Patel. This project is expected to generate over 20,000 jobs for the youth of Gujarat and will include India’s first AI-enabled, state-of-the-art Fab. Shri Arun Murugappan, Chairman of Tube Investments, emphasized that the semiconductor sector will play a key role in realizing Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi’s vision of Viksit Bharat@2047 and Atmanirbhar Bharat. Mr. Homer Chang, Director General of TECC, remarked that India is rapidly advancing in the semiconductor sector under Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi’s leadership, with Gujarat playing a crucial role. Smt. Mona Khandhar, Principal Secretary of the Department of Science and Technology, welcomed the attendees and noted that the conference would create additional opportunities in the semiconductor sector for both India and Gujarat. The conference featured eight technical sessions addressing key areas within the semiconductor industry.
The event was attended by Shri J.P. Gupta, Additional Chief Secretary of the Finance Department; Shri Manish Gurwani, M.D of Gujarat State Electronics Mission; senior officials from the Science and Technology Department; and representatives from leading semiconductor manufacturing companies.
