Create in India Challenge Season 1: Meetup’ Organised as part of Wave Summit Initiative

Mumbai, January 5, 2025: As part of the Wave Summit initiative by the Ministry of Information & Broadcasting under the Create in India Challenge (Season 1), the ‘XR Creator Hackathon Mumbai Meetup’ was organised at riidl Somaiya Vidyavihar University in Mumbai on January 4, 2025. 

The event was part of the Open Knowledge initiative of the XR Creator Hackathon, co-organized by Wavelaps, BharatXR, and XDG.  Around 80 participants took part in the session to explore the expanding world of Extended Reality (XR).

Gaurang Shetty, CEO of riidl Somaiya Vidyavihar University, stated that the Ministry of Information & Broadcasting’s unwavering support through initiatives like the Create in India Challenge is a key driver in India’s digital evolution. He highlighted that at riidl SVU, they see firsthand how these programs are enabling innovation and entrepreneurship, offering new opportunities for young creators. 

The event featured a lively opening session that introduced the WAVES initiative and the Create in India Challenge, encouraging participants to actively engage in India’s growing XR ecosystem. Presentations on the evolution of XR technologies offered deep dives into AR, VR, and MR applications across various industries. Participants also had the opportunity to explore an interactive AR/VR experience zone, engaging with professional-grade XR projects. Dynamic brainstorming sessions fostered creativity and innovation, with winners of the brainstorming activities receiving certificates and special recognition. 

Krunal MB Gediya, Founder at XDG, Mumbai, expressed that the overwhelming response to the event reflects Mumbai’s tech community's growing enthusiasm for XR technologies. He emphasized that the collaboration between their partners has created a platform that not only educates but also inspires future creators in the XR space. 

The XR Creator Hackathon has seen 2,200 participants so far from around 150 cities across India. The event highlighted the country’s growing interest in immersive technologies and underscored the success of the Create in India Challenge, which aims to foster innovation and collaboration within the XR community. 

India’s emerging XR and AI startups are making significant strides in reshaping the nation’s digital landscape. Events like these, sponsored by the Ministry of Information & Broadcasting and showcasing initiatives like WAVES and the Create in India Challenge, are central to India's push toward becoming a global leader in immersive technologies.
