Mumbai, May 19, 2025: Mumbai is not just the financial capital of India but a globally recognized metropolis.

Beautiful Mumbai

Every day, millions of people commute across the city, thousands of vehicles travel along its highways, and the city remains constantly in motion. However, with the growing population, rapid urbanization, and continuous construction, the amount of waste on highways has increased significantly. Garbage dumped along the roadside, unauthorized construction debris, and neglected public spaces have become major issues. This not only affects the city’s aesthetics but also disrupts traffic flow and poses health risks to citizens.

A Comprehensive Highway Cleanliness Campaign

As part of the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation’s (BMC) ongoing cleanliness initiatives, a special highway cleanliness campaign was conducted from March 17 to March 22. During this campaign, a total of 86.6 kilometers along the Eastern and Western Express Highways were cleaned, and 241.4 tons of garbage and debris were properly disposed of. The campaign was conducted in key areas like Sion, Bandra, Ghatkopar, Andheri, Vikhroli, and Kandivali (90 ft road). Since these areas experience heavy traffic, the removal of unauthorized waste and debris has made travel more convenient and safer.

Why is this campaign important?

This campaign is not only aimed at enhancing the city's appearance but is also vital for public health. Waste and dust on highways can lead to respiratory issues, allergies, and eye irritations. Additionally, with the monsoon approaching, this cleanliness drive was necessary. Garbage accumulated along highways and in drains leads to waterlogging and flooding in the city. Therefore, the campaign’s impact will be both sustainable and beneficial.

Use of Technology for Cleanliness

BMC is emphasizing the use of advanced technology to improve cleanliness. Modern road sweeping machines, high-capacity vacuum cleaners, and specialized water jets are being used to maintain cleaner highways.

Citizen Participation is Crucial

A clean Mumbai is not just the responsibility of the administration but of every citizen. Citizens must contribute to keeping highways clean by disposing of waste properly, keeping their surroundings tidy, and acting responsibly in public spaces. Campaigns like these are transforming the face of the city. For Mumbai to become truly clean, beautiful, and cultured, every Mumbaikar must step forward. This will not only make the city look clean but also bring long-term benefits to its residents.
