Mumbai, November 9, 2025: Sanjay Gandhi National Park (SGNP), the green heart of Mumbai, is witnessing a major transformation under the personal guidance of Union Commerce and Industry Minister and North Mumbai MP Piyush Goyal, whose consistent efforts have brought fresh momentum to the park’s comprehensive redevelopment projects. As a result, SGNP is developing a dedicated Orchidarium and Fragrance Garden, featuring a diverse range of aromatic and flowering species. The initiative aims to create an immersive sensory experience while serving as a powerful new draw for nature enthusiasts and tourists alike.

The park’s Aromatic Tree Garden, established in 2015, will now be expanded under this plan.

Simultaneously, work is progressing to revamp the Gandhi Smriti Mandir, for which a detailed restoration plan has been prepared.

Union Commerce and Industry Minister & North Mumbai MP Piyush Goyal said:

Guided by the vision of Prime Minister Narendra Modi for growth with sustainability & initiatives of CM Devendra Fadnavis led  Maharashtra Govt,  Sanjay Gandhi National Park is being revamped as a living heritage of India’s biodiversity.   From the new Orchidarium to upgraded safaris and electric mobility, we are building a sustainable, world-class experience for tourists.”*_

Lion to Open Soon and Tiger Safari undergoing Upgrades

The Lion Safari, home to two pairs of lions and a calf, is being completely revamped with improved enclosures, viewing zones, and tourist facilities. The PWD is completing the major works, and the safari is expected to reopen to the public by end of this month.

The Tiger Safari, which currently houses ten tigers (two males, five females, and three cubs), is also being strengthened. Discussions are in progress with Chandrapur Park authorities to bring another male tiger to SGNP, adding to the attraction.

Wildlife Hospital

A well-equipped wildlife hospital provides treatment and post-care for injured wild animals with a dedicated staff to look after them. In addition, work for new quarantine cages and transit treatment facilities has been allotted to PWD

Mini-Train to Start Soon

A major upgrade to the electric mini train, one of the park’s most beloved attractions, is also underway. It is expected to be ready for visitors by December 31.

Smart Mobility and Eco-Tourism Push

In a major step toward sustainable tourism, the park has launched an online ticketing system and introduced battery-powered e-buggies to transport visitors from the main gate to the Kanheri Caves. 10 e-buggies have been operational since October 18, with another *20 to join by 30 November 2025* .

To enhance last-mile connectivity within the park, six e-buses are currently operating, and nine more will be deployed soon.

500 Bicycles to encourage eco-friendly entourage

A bicycle initiative has also been launched, encouraging eco-friendly exploration of the park’s trails. Presently, 150 bicycles are available, and 500 more will be added shortly.

This year, nine kilometers of internal roads—part of the 28-km network connecting various tourist spots—have been upgraded by the PWD for smoother and safer movement.

Tourism Promotion and Outreach

Against the backdrop of this large-scale makeover, MP Piyush Goyal has directed park authorities to undertake special outreach efforts to increase public awareness, ensuring that both tourists visiting Mumbai and city residents discover and experience the rejuvenated park.

Currently, the grand entrance renovation of the park is progressing rapidly and is expected to be completed soon. The Maharashtra Housing and Area Development Authority (MHADA) has undertaken the renovation work, while the Public Works Department (PWD) is executing the beautification plan.

With implementation of major initiatives accelerated through interventions of Piyush Goyal, the Sanjay Gandhi National Park is emerging as a word-class ecological & tourism destination.
