Mumbai, February 26, 2024: Day 2 of the IVCA Conclave 2024 began with an insightful keynote address by Shaurya Doval, Director, India Foundation, who shed light on the economic context in which Indian AIFs are operating.
He began by saying, “You know, the nature of our trade is unlike the public markets – we are by default asked to take calls over a 3-year, 5-year period. Those periods are not determined by the businesses or companies we invest in, but the macro environment in which we are operating. Sometimes, it is the macro trends that completely derail us from our investment objectives. So, it’s broadly understanding – because we are patient capital – therefore, to be able to see through the short-term trends to see where the secular line of the context in which we are operating is moving.”
He continued, “In finance, very early in my life, when I was on Wall Street, we learned one very simple thing – trend is your best friend. So, if you get the trend right, you’re broadly in good company. So, the question on the table today is that, as investors in India, are we on the right trend?”
To this, he answered, “As a matter of fact, there is no other place in the world that we can predict over the next 25 years, which could offer a better investment option than India. These 25 years are, for all practical purposes, the next trajectory, and it will be the private capital industry which is to bring orbital shift in India as a nation to help transfer it from USD 3T to USD 30T by the end of 100 years for India.”
