Mumbai, 1 June 2026: The Indian stock market closed on a cautious note today, with the Nifty 50 settling at 23382.6, lower by -165.15 points or -0.70%. The session was characterized by the Lower High Lower Low pattern, as the index opened at 23667.95, reached a high of 23733.70, and touched a low of 23575.95. The Sensex also ended lower, falling -508.40 points, to close at a weaker level.

Sectoral performance remained largely negative with broad-based selling visible across financials and consumption-oriented sectors. IT emerged as the best-performing sector, supported by strong buying in frontline technology stocks, followed by Media and Metals, which managed to end in positive territory. On the other hand, FMCG witnessed the sharpest decline, followed by Finserv, Auto, PSU Banks and Realty, reflecting weakness across rate-sensitive and domestic-facing segments. Banking, Private Banks, Construction, Cement and Healthcare also traded lower, keeping overall market sentiment subdued despite selective strength in technology-related counters.

Indian markets opened on a positive note but were unable to hold on to early gains as escalating geopolitical tensions in the Middle East and rising crude oil prices weighed on investor sentiment. The Nifty faced selling pressure near level of 23730 and gradually moved lower throughout the session, reflecting caution across the broader market. Continued foreign institutional outflows, pressure in heavyweight banking stocks and concerns over the potential inflationary impact of higher energy prices further dragged domestic equities. Traders also remained wary amid fears of a widening Israel-Hezbollah conflict and possible disruptions to global oil supply chains, while mixed global cues and profit booking in select sectors contributed to the subdued market mood.
